Our National Treasure

Early on Saturday, 30th July 2022, about one hundred people turned up at the Old West Kirk building to hear how local glass expert Alec Galloway repairs and cares for stained glass.

Many thanks to Greenock Historical Society for organising this event. Our chair Eleanor shared her thoughts about the building and its future. This is summed up below.

Many of us attended the meeting because of our interest in the stained glass.

But it was clear that many were also concerned about the future of the building. I believe that we cannot save the windows without saving the church.

Saving the building and the glass cannot be done by one person or one group alone. Inverclyde Heritage Network was set up to bring different groups together and we must all work together to save this historic building for Inverclyde’s and Scotland’s heritage.

Several interested parties are beginning to discuss ideas on how the community can take ownership of the building. This could be a wonderful resource for the community of Inverclyde to gather together and share the history and heritage not only of this church but of Inverclyde.

We are looking for ideas from all groups and individuals, to bring people and groups together in the hope that we can develop a plan to save our national treasure for future generations. Add your ideas or comment in the feedback below
